A team of Aboriginal men and women and researchers from Murdoch University, Telethon Kids Institute, the Department of Health and the Centre of Perinatal Excellence have conducted research into perinatal mental health screening among Aboriginal women.
A strong and solid family is critical to our future. It is all of our business to keep family strong. Foundations for a strong family start before baby is born.

This research, called Kalyakool Moort - Always Family, has been undertaken over 3 years.
Data Collection: data has been collected and analyzed from the following sources:

1. Midwives, child health nurses, general practitioners, Aboriginal health workers and others working with Aboriginal families:
  • interviews
  • focus groups
  • anonymous online survey
2. Social workers from the Family Court and Aboriginal Liaison Officers and Health Workers from the field:
  • focus groups
3. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and fathers::
  • individual 'yarning' sessions
4. Aboriginal Elders:
  • 'yarning' circles

Screening Tools Analysis Workshops:
In addition to this data, screening tool analysis
has been undertaken which included language appropriateness, cultural relevance, psychometric properties, usability, consideration of DSM 5 criteria for anxiety, depression and PTSD, what would be useful in alternative screen and why. Tools assessed according to this criteria included:
  • the K10 
  • the Whooley
  • the EPDS
  • the KMMS
  • the PASS tool
  • Strong Souls
  • AimHi
  • the HANAA
  • PHQ9 (adaptation)
  • GEM
  • ANRQ
  • KICA-dep
  • WASC-Y 
Outcomes:
All
data collection and analysis has been completed. A full report will be published As Jayne Kotz's PhD
However a significant outcome has been
the development of a state-wide perinatal screening process and tool for depression and anxiety for use with Aboriginal mothers and fathers called 'Baby Coming-You Ready?'

Kalyakool Moort -Always Family is a collaboration between Murdoch University, the Telethon Kids Institute(TKI) and the Department of Health Office of Nursing and Midwifery.
Kalyakool Moort-Always Family was part of a PhD undertaken by Jayne Kotz though Murdoch University.
It was supported a Nurses Memorial Trust Award and the Koya Aboriginal Corporation Perinatal Mental Health & Well-being Award-sponsored by beyond, and part stipends awarded by the Office of Nursing and Midwifery and the TKI Center of Research Excellence in Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing.
